  • RootsWeb – The oldest and largest free genealogy site, supported by Ancestry.com
  • Cyndi’s List of Genealogy Websites – A categorized & cross-referenced index to genealogical resources on the Internet that includes a list of links that point you to genealogical research sites online. This is described as a “card catalog” to the genealogical collection in the immense library that is the Internet. A good place to start when you can’t think of where to start your genealogical research.
  • Genealogy Spot – A good beginning set of tools for discovering your roots. Provides good
    pointers on where to begin and how to search. This is a good compliment to Ancestry.com.
  • Ellis Island Records – A good place to go if you know you have ancestors who immigrated to the United States in very late 19th Century and the early 20th Century. You can search passenger lists and do other kinds of record searches. Includes the Genealogy Learning Center, which offers basic assistance in locating family history information.
  • Family Search – A service offered by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day
    Saints. The church strongly believes in tracing their heritage in order to serve their ancestors faithfully. Because of this promise, the church has developed an expertise at finding ancestors around the globe. This is a very useful service for locating information on anyone in any country.
  • The Historic Pittsburgh Project – Historic Pittsburgh is a digital collection that provides an opportunity to explore and research the history of Pittsburgh and the surrounding Western Pennsylvania area on the Internet. Currently, it consists of a full-text collection of over 400 items, over 900 land ownership maps, 252 archival finding aids, census schedules for the city of Pittsburgh (1850-1880)
    and Allegheny City (1850-1870), an online chronology with over 3,100 entries (1717-2001), and access to the library and archives catalog of the Historical Society of Western Pennsylvania.
  • WPGS Catalog – The Western Pennsylvania Genealogical Society has hard to find information for those from Pennsylvania.
  • AncestryPlus (use in the library only) – This is an enhanced version of Ancestry.com’s celebrated genealogical database that provides information on 1.7 billion names, more than 3000 databases, and much, much more. Everything you need to get you on your way.
